About
The way of Sho calligraphy encourages care and mindful practice while nurturing wider creativity and expression. With traditional sumi ink, fude brushes and washi paper we will work from selected ancient characters from China and Japan. Inspired by the natural environment around Wiston Lodge, and by meditation practice itself, we will work on characters such as 念 Nen – mindfulness – feeling – care, and 山水 Sansui – mountains and water – landscapes – hill stream.
We will have time to relax with some free markmaking and explore the aesthetics and process of Sho, feeling and noticing the materials used and welcoming our brushstrokes and imperfections moment by moment. Walking meditation and practice outdoors around Wiston Lodge to get in touch with the earth through our senses will bring us into our bodies and expand our awareness.
With demonstrations and friendly help from artist Blair Thomson, a member of Glasgow Zen Group who studied Sho and markmaking in Osawano, Japan with calligraphy Master Wakabayashi. No previous experience is needed and all materials are provided.
