About
Sho calligraphy practice nurtures a broadening of our creativity and expression. With traditional sumi ink and fude brushes we will work from selected ancient characters from China and Japan, such as kokuu 虚空 – boundless space – and daichi 大地 – great earth – inspired by the natural environment and setting outside Lenzie. Brushstroke by brushstroke we will engage with the aesthetics of Sho and the creative process, embracing our markmaking and imperfections in each moment, discovering ways to deepen and improvise. We will experiment with various brushes and papers.
Time for meditation will help us, using a meditation practice you are comfortable with or being guided in how to meditate, along with walking in the open grounds and being mostly silent during the day. Outdoors we will engage with our five senses to get in touch with the earth and sky and deepen our sensory awareness, sense of breath and embodiment.
With demonstrations and friendly help from artist Blair Thomson, a member of Glasgow Zen Group who studied Sho and markmaking in Osawano, Japan with calligraphy Master Wakabayashi.
Margaret Kerr is a mindfulness teacher, psychotherapist, and mountain leader working outdoors with groups regularly, with her own art practice working with trees, water and the land, and will lead us outside.
No previous experience is needed and all materials provided. There is a one hour lunch break – please bring your own food or some to share. Waterproofs are recommended.
