Brushing Rays of Spring Light
In April as the lighter days brought new growth we had Spring themed calligraphy at both our online class, and also at the ornate Elder Park Library during the Easter weekend. We practiced shunkо̄ 春光, which means Spring light.

After learning about the various styles and visual background of the two kanji characters, such as the person holding the flame in hikari 光, Blair gave demonstrations of the brushwork, and then we brushed both the kaisho standard script and sо̄sho cursive ‘grass’ styles, and briefly brushed the gyо̄sho semi cursive style.
Participants got on very well with hikari 光 and the sensitive balance of haru 春, especially after looking at the structure of the characters and the spaces between strokes. And they particularly enjoyed the flow of the fully cursive grass style.
Thanks so much for joining the classes and for your enthusiasm to practice shodō.
