Here is a wee bit of news from the D+P Studio!
22 February 2018
Inspired by textures and the rhythms of lines and spaces in nature, we started with some imaginative marks responding to these themes, before drawing from some natural objects.
Ink and a variety of brushes came in handy to explore those textures as well as experiment and try out working expressively with drawing and painting approaches.

We continued some of the work from the previous session, this time concentrating on stones and pebbles, looking at their shapes and being led by their character to finding different ways to draw them.
Cutting and sticking or tearing, we used various papers to make stony and natural feeling shapes or created shapes to put around areas of drawing marks. Exploring the different possibilities of stones with these materials in an abstract way was fun!

Oil pastels were ideal to use to draw the textures of stones and wood from our collection of natural objects picked up from beaches, forests and mountains over the years!
Looking into the intricate surface textures to find inspiration, we started working from one or two of the things with loose doodles and drawings.
Then we went on to making a larger piece with a more imaginative space and aspects of the natural objects coming in like the spiraling shapes of shells or the organic patterns of lichen on rocks.

We used a few different approaches to draw some studio objects like rollers or palette knives, such as drawing round the object, or drawing holding two pens at once, and some sketching too.
Yellow, beige, red, black and green coloured sugar papers with paint pens gave us a nice effect with some contrast and a sense of atmosphere and space for the objects to be drawn in. Some of the young people who joined us had fun experimenting with portraits and silly faces, good to see them enjoy!

8 October 2017
After last time at Maryhiill Art Group where we worked individually drawing from leaves and autumn shapes, this time we went straight on to a large piece together. About four metres wide, it was looking like quite a challenge to work in just over an hour with any pre planned composition. No pressure!
Â
We quickly got going though with some autumn leafy shapes and textures before adding more whimsical shapes, earthy textures, and dreamy sky blue spaces. Not worrying about the outcome, we experimented with different colours of pens and tried to bring the interspersed shapes together. We chatted also about which areas were not quite working, and found some creative spontaneous solutions 🙂
After some effort we managed to put the long mural like abstract autumnal vista on the wall so we could stand back and enjoy our night’s artwork together.

Inspired by the Kelvin River area and leaves collected nearby, as well as it being national poetry day, we began with some doodling and writing words in different colours, finding inspiration from our experience and finding ways to bring writing and drawing together.
We used coloured inks, beautiful transparent silky colours, to capture some of the autumnal green and golden brown hues as well as the shapes of the leaves.
Then we used palette knives and rollers to play around with the materials, bringing in some contrasting oil pastel textures, and just try out some different marks and let things flow 🙂 The apples from the community garden we took home and made into jam!

The combinations of deep hued colours, from crimson to viridian green, and textures was really enjoyable to look at. We also read some short Haiku poems too about the autumn leaves and moon.

We collected leaves and other autumnal objects near the Kelvin River for our drawing inspiration as we returned to the Maryhill Hub for more creativity.

26 June 2017
Using oil pastels at Maryhill Art Group we worked from a setup of studio objects including tripod, paint tubes, brushes and water jugs.
We looked at artists Picasso and Heron. Their works encouraged us to feel free to block in areas of colour and use line and edges against the shapes…

16 June 2017
We began on some small drawings from shapes in the buildings and garden area.
Then had some fun (and a good few splashes) exploring with mixed media with ink, graphite and collage on larger sheets of cartridge paper..
