Last week we had lots of fun with different pens, pastels, pencils and paints, tree landscapes guided our imagination 🌲🌳🌴

At the last Zen Heart Brush we explored the Kaisho and Sosho styles of shodo calligraphy, working with tenchi 天地. We were inspired by the examples of calligrapher Chiei 智永 from his version of the fascinating Thousand Character Classic 千字文 – Senjimon.
His name means wisdom eternal – in Buddhism this wisdom is jnana (pronounced gyana in English) pure awareness unrestricted by concepts. Chiei is from the 7th Century Sui dynasty. He is the great great great…..great grandchild of Ogishi ( 王羲之 4th Century, one of China’s four famous calligraphers).
Thanks to Blair’s teacher Kobayashi Sensei in Japan for the encouragement to work with this text.
Towards the end of the year as the dry leaves rustled across the pavements, Blair practiced Shakyo Sutra tracing at temples in Tokyo, working mainly from Genjo’s version of the Hannya Shingyo – Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra.
You can see the hanging scroll of Genjo / Xuanzang in the Soto Zen shakyo hall, he is beautifully pictured sitting and beginning work.
Macha tea and a snack are given to practitioners at certain temples, a lovely way to settle, connect with your senses, as well as give some much appreciated energy. There are different sutras and versions of each that can be traced or copied in the temples.

We created a landscapey/ community maze, can you slowly find your way through, from the arrow on the left to the arrow in the centre?
At the Zen Heart Brush in November, we practiced ‘生命 seimei – life’ in the cosy Kagyu Samye Dzong, Tibetan Buddhist centre. Winter has arrived and energy is waning in Glasgow just now but we vigorously enjoyed writing ‘life’!
We talked about life, the elements, universal symbols such as 三角 – triangle, 四角 – square, 丸 – circle, and we made various marks and strokes and worked on kaisho, tensho and gyosho styles.
Last night at Clydebank art group we had a free flowing fun evening of painting with pattern and colours to brighten up our wintery day! Thanks to all the participants who came along to the group this year. The next session at the fabulously friendly and comfy Centre 81 is on the 22nd of January 🤗
