Serenity and Composed Calligraphy with Zen Theme

We brushed the last two kanji of the serene zen phrase anjinryūmyō (安心)立命(あんじん)りゅうみょう at the early October class, meaning Peace and Enlightenment. The autumnal decorated Woodside Library was peaceful and bright, ideal for relaxing and enjoying our shodō calligraphy practice.

This month we had some more time for the sōsho 草書 cursive style, and Blair gave demonstrations on how to brush this, as well as the kaisho 楷書script style, and the relationship between these and the gyōsho 行書 semi-cursive for ryūmyō 立命.

We looked each of the traditional materials and tried to find a harmony between them whilst brushing. Blair also talked about working on larger pieces, with an example on tokusun sized paper (42x162cm), and how to align kanji together in them vertically and decide the spaces in between them.

After the classes Blair shared a video of the brushwork of this month’s kanji and styles. Many thanks for participating and we look forward to brush with you again soon.
